Abstract
697,923. Electron lenses. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1952 [March 6, 1951], No. 5418/51. Class 39(i) The magnetic lens of an elec tron microscope has the pole piece nearest the electron source made with a large transverse face and an aperture which i equal to, or less than, one fifth of the radius of the bore of the other pole piece. The pole piece 8 nearer the electron source has an aperture 11 the radius of which is equal to, or less than, one fifth of that of the bore 14 in the other pole piece 13; the magnetic gap is one half to twice the radius of the bore 14 and the specimen is arrangec from the pole piece 8 a distance which may be equal to, but not greater than, twice the radius of the bore 11. The face of the pole piece 8 may be modified to compensate for astigmatism caused by irregularities in the bore of the piece 13 or it may be of parabolic or hyperbolic shape or it may carry adjustable screw plugs of magnetic material. The specimen may be introduced into the lens through the gap therebetween or through the bore 14; aperture limiting stops may be similarly introduced.
