Class 100(i) Marking tags 8, for dividing, e.g. into reams, a stack 6 of paper sheets delivered from a sheetcutting machine, are already folded down at their forward ends 23 into a U-like shape before introduction to the train of sheets. A particular sheet 4, or group of sheets, draws the tag 8 into the train of sheets cut from a web 1, or from a number of superposed webs, by a cross cutter 2. The strip for forming the tags is fed by rolls 10 from a reel 7 to an adjustable cutter 12 on a roll 11, the moment of cutting being determined by the raising of a counter roll 13 mounted on a lever 14 pivoted at 15. The forward end 23 of the tag 8, led by rolls 20, 21, is buckled in a channel 22 to be seized by roll 21 and a folding roll 24. Since its middle portion is recessed Fig. 4 (not shown), the roll 24 folds sharply only the longitudinal edges of the tag 8. The cut and folded tag is held in readiness in a feed channel 25 having a reciprocable mouthpiece 30. The core 35 of an electromagnet is attached by a flexible strap 33 to pins 31 on the mouthpiece 30, the pins moving in fixed guiding slots 32. When a set number of paper sheets 4 has been delivered from the web 1, or webs, a sheet counter 37, through a time-delay relay 38, energizes the electromagnet and moves the core 35 and mouthpiece 30 to expose the folded end 23 of the tag 8 for engagement with a sheet 4 or group of sheets to be marked. A spring 40 returns the mouthpiece to its original position for reloading. When a tag 8 is loaded ready in the mouthpiece 30, a motor 26 which drives the tag-making device is switched off by a lever 28 operated by a cam 29 on the same shaft 17 as a cam 18 for raising the lever 14. Just after the actuation of the electromagnet, however, a time-delay relay 39 closes contacts 27 for restarting the motor 26 to prepare a further marking tag 8.
