Abstract

697,133. Feeding cartridge cases to machines. TAYLOR & CHALLEN, Ltd., and CHALLEN, H. D. June 16, 1952 [June 22, 1951], No. 14824/51. Class 9(i) The feed of cartridge cases 4 to a machine is controlled by a camactuated trap door 5 from which the. cases pass to a shoot 6, there being a feeler 34 associated with the shoot actuated through linkage by a separate cam. The arrangement is such that in the event of a feeler contacting a cartridge case in the shoot the linkage assumes a position to prevent opening of the cam - controlled trap door. The machine shown has a rotating shaft 9 fitted with the two cams 8, 18. The cam 8 acts on a pivoted arm 10 which is connected by a rod 14 to an arm 15 keyed to a shaft 16. A bell crank lever 17 on the shaft has one arm 17a engaging in a slot in the trap door 5. The other cam 18 acts on a pivoted arm 20 which is connected by a link 23 to the part 24a of a U-shaped lever 24 whose ends are pivoted at 25 to the arms 26a of L-shaped levers 26. A central projection 33 on the lever 24 is adapted to contact the spring- controlled feeler 34 which pivots freely on the shaft 16. Operation. In normal use the cam 8 causes the arm 17a to close the trap door and a spring 12 acting on the arm 10 opens the trap door, the cam 18 meanwhile causing the projection 33 to depress the feeler 34 into the shoot. If, however, the feeler strikes a cartridge case, the lever 24 is caused to pivot about the point of contact of the projection and feeler, thus causing the levers 26 to swing about their pivots against the action of a spring 29. This movement causes a cross-member 36 connecting the levers 26 to engage a step 17b' of the bell-crank 17, thus arresting the opening movement of the bell-crank and trap door when the lever 10 registers with a dwell in the cam 8. The step 17b prevents the return of the levers 26 until almost the end of the cycle, at which point the lever 10 is moved by cam 8 slightly to the right to effect unlatching.
