Abstract
In the chlorinating-roasting of materials containing copper and/or zinc in addition to sulphur in admixture with rock salt or other natural chloride salts, e.g. potassium chloride-magnesium chloride, or potassium chloride-sodium chloride-magnesium sulphate, by treatment with oxygen-containing gases, in particular air, the gases, preheated if necessary, are passed through the mixture to be roasted, advantageously in a layer having a height of less than 1.5 metres in the quiescent state at such a speed that the particles are maintained in random turbulent motion; fresh material is supplied to, and roasted material is withdrawn from, the layer continuously or periodically. The process is suitably applied to iron pyrites roasted by the turbulent layer method, the material after being mixed with chloride, being supplied at elevated temperature to the chloridizing roast. The gas pressure employed is usually less than 2 metres water column. Unroasted pyrites may be added to bring the sulphur content to say 5-6 per cent. A roasting temperature of 400-700 DEG C is specified.
