Abstract

Rubber of improved quality is obtained from latex skim by digesting the skim with a proteolytic enzyme to decompose proteinaceous materials, acidifying, and recovering the resulting rubber coagulum. The enzyme may be trypsin or papein in an amount of 0.01 to 0.025 per cent. based on the weight of the skim. Digestion is preferably effected at 25-40 DEG C for 12-48 hours and in the presence of about 0.05 per cent. of ammonium or sodium polychlorophenate and excess ammonia. Coagulation may be effected with formic acid.
