694,905. Making brakes; assembling force fits; jointing. SOC. POMPES NOEL. April 25, 1951 [May 8, 1950], No. 9619/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXIV] Cased forms.-A brake-drum comprising an inner, centrifugally. cast, friction ring held in a cover member of light alloy by mutual, radial resilient pressure, contact is characterized in that fine longitudinal ridges are provided on at least one of the mating surfaces to prevent relative rotation. The ring 12 may be cut from a centrifugallycast tube. The cover member 1 may be diecast and have cooling ribs 3 and a flange 4. The external diameter of the ring 6 is greater, e.g. by 1 mm., than the internal diameter of the member 1 and these are assembled after cooling the ring or heating the member 1 or both heating and cooling. Force may be used in addition during assembly or, if the surfaces are slightly tapered, force alone, heating &c. being omitted. As an alternative the ring may be forced through a female cone into the cover member. The ridges 9, Fig. 2, may be of triangular cross-section, 0.5 to 1 mm. radially, and be machine cut. Relative axial movement may be prevented by clenching a lip 13, Fig. 3, of the member 1 over a bevelled part 11 of the ring.
