Abstract

Artificial threads are obtained by extruding a solution of a synthetic rubber obtained by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene or chloroprene either alone or in combination with a minor proportion of other polymerizable compounds such as styrene or acrylonitrile, containing a hydroperoxide into a coagulant bath containing sulphur dioxide, and at least 5 per cent by weight of the solvent used to dissolve the rubber, the extrusion being carried out in the presence of water. The water is preferably added in a proportion of 2-8 per cent by volume to the coagulant bath but may be added to the spinning bath in which case a water-miscible blending solution such as ethanol is also added. The hydroperoxide may be tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and the solvent toluene and the coagulant bath a mixture of ethanol or isopropanol and toluene. Specification 679,040 is referred to.ALSO:Artificial threads are obtained by extruding a solution of a natural rubber or a synthetic rubber obtained by polymerizing 1.3 butadiene or chloroprene either alone or in combination with a minor proportion of other polymerizable compounds such as styrene or acronitrile containing a hydroperoxide into a coagulant bath containing sulphur dioxide, and at least 5 per cent. by weight of the solvent used to dissolve the rubber the extrusion being carried out in the presence of water. The water is preferably added in a proportion of 2 to 8 per cent. by volume to the coagulant bath but may be added to the spinning bath in which case a water miscible blending solution such as ethanol is also added.
