Abstract

693,872. Controlling a clutch-brake combination. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. July 25, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No. 17636/51. Class 80 (ii). A starter handle 12 for a yarn winding device, adapted to rock in one plane about the axis of a spindle 11 to which it is attached for actuating the spindle-driving means of the device, and also to rock in another plane about a pivot pin 18 beyond which the end of the handle extends, is also longitudinally movable with respect to the pivot pin to vary the position of the handle end. Rotation of the spindle 11 actuates a spring-mounted tensioning idler which can cause a driving belt to grip a pulley on a, shaft 6 of the yarn winding device and thus connect or disconnect the drive. Rocking the handle 12 about the axis of the spindle 11 also engages or disengages a brake member 26 from a wheel 27 on the shaft 6. The handle 12 is hollow and contains a compression spring secured at one end by a screw 16 and at the other end abutting against the pivot pin 18; the pivot pin passes through slots 19 in the starter handle and is secured to the end of the spindle 11, the construction being such that the handle can be pushed downwards against the action of the spring. A part 23 of the starter handle extends below the pivot pin 18 and has a lip 24 which can be engaged with an expander collar 25 on the shaft 6. Juxtaposed to the collar 25 is a cone holder 8 on which a yarn package 9 is wound by rotation of the shaft 6 and a suitable yarn traverse mechanism. To remove the yarn package from the cone holder, the handle 12 is depressed against the action of the spring and rotated anti-clockwise about the pivot pin 18, Fig. 2, to engage the lip 24 with the expander collar 25, which is thus thrust into the cone holder to release the cone forming the core of the yarn package 9. A dog segment 28 cooperates with means, not shown, to retain the lever 12 in the running position.
