693,155. Window operating. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1951 [Dec. 9, 1950], No. 22846/51. Class 20(iii) A motor vehicle window system having a number of windows 1, 2, 3, 4 comprising an actuator for opening and closing each window, a rotary drive common to all the actuators, a power transmission for each window normally disconnected from the common drive but connectible thereto for actuating the respective actuator, and means selectively operable to connect the respective window actuator through the transmission to the common drive for operating any window. Each actuator comprises an endless cable passed round four pulleys 7, one of the lower pulleys having a worm gear thereon which meshes with a worm 9 driven by a flexible shaft 10 to provide a self-locking transmission. The shaft 10 passes from the door on the hinge side through vertically offset holes in the door and frame, so that the cable extends substantially in alignment with the hinge axis to avoid twisting &c. The power unit supported on the chassis comprises an electric motor 13 which is preferably reversible and has its armature shaft 14 extending at both ends. Clutch means 15, comprising pinions 17 on shafts 10 meshable with pinions 18 on the motor shaft 14, selectively connect the shafts 10 to the motor shaft and are controlled by manual switches 16 individual to each window. Solenoids 19 effect proper intermeshing of the pinions 18 and 17 as the solenoid connected switches 16 are actuated. The terminal portion of the window movement is retarded by interposing in the circuit a shunting resistance element 20 by opening the respective upper or lower switch 21 by means of a trip device on the window. To avoid injury to the system by holding the control switch closed after the window has reached its terminal position, safety means 25 are provided, e.g. as shown, in the form of clutches which may comprise co-operating friction discs, designed to slip under the pressure of an abnormal load. A thermal cut-out switch 24 may also be inserted in the circuit.
