Abstract
692,732. Gas manufacture. C. D. PATENTS, Ltd. Dec. 13, 1951 [Dec. 20, 1950], No. 31071/50. Classes 55(i) and 55(ii) [Also in Group XI] In apparatus for the continuous conversion of solid liquid or gaseous carbonaceous matter into useful gas, the fuel admixed with air, air and oxygen, or oxygen is burned in a chamber, the flames, which are of flat fan or fish-tail shape, being blanketted with steam and/or carbon dioxide which is admitted to the chamber at a zone or zones spaced from the planes of the flames, so that the products of combustion and the steam and/or carbon dioxide mix turbulently as they pass to the gas outlet. In Fig. 11, the chamber casing 12 is lined with refractory material 13, the burners 16, 17 are supplied with pulverulent fuel by conduits 28, 29 and screw feeders 30, 31 and superheated steam is supplied by pipes 36, 37, 38 to inlets 18, 19, 27. Oxygen from a pipe 15 is supplied by pipes 34, 35 to the screw-feeder casings. As shown the burners 16, 17 are upwardly inclined, the steam inlets 18, 19 are horizontally directed and the inlets 27 are upwardly inclined. The burners, however, may be horizontally directed or some may be directed upwardly and others horizontally. Some of the steam inlets may be directed downwardly, but in all cases, impingement of the steam on to the flat flames is avoided. The product gas is taken off at 21 and the bottom of the chamber has a water seal in a rotary receptacle 20 having a conventional ash discharge 43. A burner for pulverized coal is shown in Figs. 12, 13, coal and oxygen being fed through a tube 44 to a nozzle 45 having an outlet 47 in slit form, the diverging passage leading thereto being divided by two fins 54. The tubular part 46 of the nozzle is provided with a jacket 48 supplied either with steam, carbon dioxide, a combustible gas or a mixture thereof, which is admitted to the nozzle through apertures 50 which are inclined towards the slit 47. A waterjacket 51, having inlet and outlet pipes 52, 53, surrounds the burner. The burners are spaced uniformly around the axis of the chamber and, if more than one set of burners are used, the burners in one set may be staggered relatively to burners in another set. In a modification, the chamber is double ended and is horizontally arranged, the gas outlet is at the centre of the top of the chamber and is directly opposed to a water-sealed ash outlet.
