Abstract

691,888. Agglutinated fibrous sheets; compound sheet materials; rollers. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. May 23, 1951. [June 3, 1950] No. 12053/51. Classes 42 (ii) and 140. A laminated flexible fabric-like material consists of a layer of parallel yarns of non-plasticised, continuous, cellulose acetate filaments laminated by autogenous bonding to a web consisting of a compacted carded mixture of staple viscose rayon fibres and staple plasticised cellulose acetate fibres. The plasticised cellulose acetate fibres are in the proportion of 50 to 65 per cent. by weight and are autogenously bonded at their crossing points, e.g. as the result of hot-pressing, to form a network within which the viscose rayon fibres are distributed. The laminated material is irnpregnated with a flexible, water-resistant sizing that superficially coats the yarns without stiffening the material. A carded or gametted web 10, Fig. 2, containing a mixture of viscose rayon staple fibres and plasticised cellulose acetate staple fibres, is compacted by causing it to pass around part of the circumference of a rotating polished, heated drum 11, against which it is pressed by soft rolls 12 and 13 which consist of sheet metal cylinders upon which are wound five turns of smooth, finely woven glass cloth. The compacted web is stripped from the heated drum with the aid of an air-jet 15, passes around a wood roller 14, between steel pull rolls 16, 17 and is wound up at 18. To make the. laminated material, the resulting compacted carded web 26, Fig. 3, is unwound from a storage roll 27, and passes around a rotating heated drum 25 after non-plasticised continuous filament cellulose acetate yarns supplied as two "sheets" of yarns 20, 21, from warp beams have been pressed on to its outer surface by a glass-cloth-covered pressure roll 24. The yarns become bonded to the staple cellulose acetate fibres in the carded web and the laminated product leaves the drum after passing under a pressure roller 28. The laminated web is cooled by an air-jet 29, passed through a coloured impregnating composition in bath 34, over polythenecovered guide rolls 35, 36 into a drying oven 37, over guide rolls 38, over a smoothing slat 39, over guide rolls 40, 42, and 44 with intervening ironing drums 41 and 43, and is wound up at 45. The web may be slit into fancy ribbons for tying up flowers or parcels. The impregnating composition may be an aqueous, denatured ethyl alcohol solution of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and 2-ethyl butyl maleate and an alcohol-soluble dye.
