Abstract
Alkyl acetals are prepared by treating an alcohol with an oxidizing agent in the presence of an alkyl ester of an ortho-acid. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent, e.g. diethyl ether, benzene and decahydronaphthalene. An excess of ester may be used as solvent. Preferably the alkyl esters of ortho-silicic or orthoformic acid are used. Suitable oxidizing agents include chlorine, bromine, nitrogen peroxide, selenium dioxide and chomyl chloride. The reaction is preferably carried out at temperatures between -30 DEG and +150 DEG C. Hydrogen chloride catalyses the reaction and may be added to the reaction mixture if desired. In the examples: (a) bromine is added to a mixture of isoamyl alcohol and tetramethyl orthosilicate; on distillation isovaleraldimethylacetal is obtained; (b) bromine is added to a mixture of 1-chlorobutanol-4 and tetramethyl orthosilicate to give g -chlorobutyraldimethylacetal; (c) bromine is added to a mixture of benzal alcohol and tetramethyl orthosilicate in the presence of hydrogen chloride; benzaldimethylacetal is obtained; and (d) bromine is added to a mixture of butanediol and tetramethyl orthosilicate to give a mixture of succindialdehyde tetramethylacetal and monobromosuccindialdehyde tetramethylacetal.
