Abstract
691,682. Preserving vegetable products. OESTERLE, R. Aug. 11, 1950 [Sept. 6, 1949], No. 23106/49. Class 49. In storing vegetable products such as fruits, roots and tubers, flowers, seeds and grains in a gas-tight container, the air in the container is substituted with a gas which has no reaction upon the products stored and does not affect their respiration, e.g. nitrogen, to the required oxygen content, preferably the moisture is also removed, at intervals, and the oxygen is replaced at intervals. In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown a thermally-insulated container 1<SP>1</SP> having an apertured pipe 4' in a the carbon dioxide produced is removed, and trough at the bottom and upper apertured pipes 8<SP>1</SP>. The pipe 4' is connected through an exhauster 13, a vessel 15 of moisture-absorbing agent, and a vessel 17 of carbon dioxide-absorbing agent to the pipes 8<SP>1</SP>. The pipes 8' are also connected, by a pipe 19, with valves 21 and 22 of cylinders 23 and 24 of nitrogen and oxygen respectively. After charging the container with vegetable products, the oxygen content of the atmosphere within is decreased by opening the valve 21 of the nitrogen cylinder and opening a container outlet valve 5', and, when the desired diminished oxygen content has been attained, the valves 21 and 5<SP>1</SP> are closed. Thereafter, a hygrometer 26 functions in dependence upon the moisture content desired in the container to drive or halt the exhauster 13, gas exhausted from the container being freed from moisture and carbon dioxide in the vessels 15 and 17 and re-entering the container by the pipes 8<SP>1</SP>. Sufficient fall of pressure within the container, by reason of oxygen consumption by the vegetable products, is detected by a gauge 25, which, by means of described electrically-operated devices, causes opening of the valve 22 to admit oxygen to the container, and, upon restoration of the pressure, closing of the valve 22.
