Abstract
Polycarboxylic acids (principally mellitic acid) are manufactured by the oxidation of natural or artificial materials rich in carbon, by passing nitric acid into a suspension of the carbonaceous material in sulphuric acid and heating the mixture to 130-230 DEG C. The nitric acid may be in liquid or vapour form, and in the latter case is advantageously mixed with a carrier gas, preferably an oxygen-containing gas such as air. The polycarboxylic acids may be isolated by filtering the hot reaction mixture to remove inorganic by-products, and crystallizing the acids by cooling the filtrate. In examples: (1) nitric acid (sp. gr. 1.4) is led into a suspension of coke breeze in 96 per cent sulphuric acid at 195-205 DEG C.; (2) the oxidation in (1) is effected at 170 DEG C.; (3) flotation fusain is oxidized as in (2); (4) coke from mineral oil products is oxidized as in (1) except that the concentration of the sulphuric acid is 90 per cent and the temperature 215 DEG C.; (5) pitch coke is oxidized as in (4).ALSO:Acid aluminium sulphate is obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of polycarboxylic acids by the oxidation of natural or artificial materials rich in carbon by passing nitric acid into a suspension of the carbonaceous material in sulphuric acid and heating the mixture to 130-230 DEG C. After separating the inorganic residue from the hot solution of the polycarboxylic acids by filtration, the acid aluminium sulphate, together with traces of other sulphates, may be extracted with water, and any residual silicic acid removed by filtration. In an example, coke breeze is employed as starting material.
