Abstract
691,259. Helical springs; vibration-dampers. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. May 21, 1951 [June 13, 1950], No. 14804/50. Class 108 (iii). [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] Vibrations in a rigid or semi-rigid pipe 1 are damped by a tubular spring element formed from a metal ribbon 6 which is wound on a mandrel such that the edge 4a of each turn 4 of the ribbon partly overlaps the edge 4b of the previous turn, the turns in the free state of the spring pressing against each other. Prior to winding, the ribbon may be bent in its own plane to compensate for the overlapping of adjacent turns. The element may be wound on a mandrel having an axis that is straight or of sinusoidal or spiral form of even or uneven pitch; alternatively, the mandrel is non- uniform in cross-section. The edges 4b may be in contact with the pipe, and the first turn 2 of the ribbon may overlap a sleeve 3.
