Abstract
The invention comprises an a ,g -vitamin A diacid and its preparation by condensing b -ionylidene acetaldehyde with b -methyl glutaconic anhydride and thereafter saponifying and acidulating the resulting condensation product. Subsequent decarboxylation yields the a -monocarboxy acid which may be reduced to vitamin A alcohol. The condensation may be effected in the presence of a basic condensation catalyst, e.g. an alkali metal or alkali metal hydroxide. The decarboxylation of the a :g -diacid may be effected by heat alone or in the presence of an organic base, e.g. a tertiary amine and a metal catalyst, e.g. a copper salt in the temperature range 90-175 DEG C. Reduction of the a -monocarboxy acid may be effected with lithium aluminium hydride or it may be esterified by treating with an alkyl halide in the presence of methyl ethyl ketone, an alkali metal halide and an alkali carbonate. The vitamin A active material which is obtained in the cis form may be converted to the trans form by isomerization in the presence of an isomerization catalyst, e.g. iodine. Specifications 663,791 and 668,604 are referred to.
