Abstract
688,708. Sleeve couplings; direct connections between conductors. GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. June 21, 1951 [June 21, 1950; Oct. 20, 1950], Nos. 15508/50 and 25575/50. Class 38 (i). A method of coupling a stranded conductor 1 to a similar conductor 1, as shown, or a terminal member, comprises drilling a hole 2 in the conductor end to remove at least the centre wire and the first layer of six wires therearound and inserting a rigid piece 3, applying a sleeve 7 of ductile metal over the conductor end and squeezing the sleeve to compress it and the wires therein, Fig. 2. When the coupling is to a similar conductor 1, the other conductor is similarly formed with a hole 2 and both conductors are caused to abut along a line 6 within the sleeve 7 which is then squeezed around them. When the coupling is to a terminal member, e.g. a solid rod, the rod has attached to its end a projection for insertion in the conductor hole 2, the sleeve then being squeezed around the conductor and soldered around the rod. The insertion piece 3 may be of copper or an aluminium alloy and have reduced end portions 5 formed with helical grooves which interlock with the conductor wires, and the inner surface of the sleeve 7 may be similarly grooved. In modifications, the end portions 5 may have interlocking surfaces formed by circumferential recesses of a depth 1/3 to 2/3 of the wire diameter. The first Provisional Specification refers to Specification 577,248.
