A high-speed spindle 5, particularly for use in spinning machinery, is mounted in a ball, or as shown, a roller bearing 3 and a step bearing 7, both supported in a sleeve 1 which is welded to a part-spherical boss 2 resting in a casing, not shown. Lubricant fills the lower section of the casing and also the clearance space between the sleeve 1 and the spindle 5, the sleeve 1 having an axial slot 36. Rotation of the spindle 5 carries the oil round with it, and the slot 36 presenting an opposing edge to this movement of the oil, local turbulence is set up which generates an oil mist; this oil mist lubricates the bearing 3. In modified forms of the invention, the slot 36 is replaced by an axial groove, by an axial rib in a solid sleeve, by individual bosses, projections or depressions spaced out over the inner surface, by an open tube as shown in Fig. 4, and by other like means. A shrunk-on ring 9 holds damping- means 13, 4 to the slotted bearing sleeve 1. An axial slot 46 may be provided in the damping-means 13. The width of the slot 36 may be adjusted to vary the quantity of oil mist produced; in particular, the slot may be narrower at the top than at the bottom. The neck bearing 3 may be provided with means to store excess lubricant which is thrown out, and return it when the spindle is at rest; these means also form a seal to prevent oil mist escaping. In Fig. 5, such a device comprises a non-removable cover 8 having a cavity 12 to store oil. In one modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a removable cover is described which can be filled with grease to lubricate the bearing 3 during the starting period, and in a further modification, Fig. 8, also (not shown), a labyrinth type of packing is disclosed.
