Abstract
Polymers are made continuously or batchwise by suspension polymerization of a liquid monomeric material which normally passes during suspension polymerization from a liquid to a sticky agglomerative state and then to a non-sticky granular state, by adding, to a polymerization zone comprising a constantly-agitated aqueous suspension of from 0.2 to 1 part of non-sticky granular particles consisting of at least 20 per cent of the desired polymer and the balance monomer for each part by weight of water, an aqueous suspension of the corresponding monomeric material and a polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, in which the monomer is present in an amount sufficient to maintain the above monomer/polymer ratio, and withdrawing from the zone an amount of liquid equal to the suspension added, and containing non-sticky polymer particles, and recovering the polymer particles therefrom. If desired, suspensions of plasticizers, heat and light stabilizers, and oil-soluble dyes may be added to the polymerization zone. The monomeric material may be vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, styrene, acrylonitrile, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, and mixtures.
