Abstract

687,829. Magnetic-induction accelerators. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Aug. 10, 1951 [Aug. 11, 1950], No. 18907/51. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XL(c)] An arrangement for controlling the introduction of charged particles into the equilibrium orbit of a circular accelerator, such as a betatron or synchrotron, with the aid of an additional magnetic field which is superposed on the control field that keeps the particles on the equilibrium orbit and on the field that accelerates the particles, is characterised in that one and the same switching element controls the additional magnetic field as well as the injection voltage for the charged particles, these values as a function of the time depending solely on the dimensions of the elements forming the circuits in question. In Fig. 1 condensers 5 and 6 are charged through resistance 4 from a source of A.C. and discharged through a thyratron 1 to generate a pulse through transformer 12 which is fed to the electron gun 15 and a pulse through transformer 19 which is fed to the injection coil 16 of the betatron. The delay between the two pulses is controlled by the circuit constants of the two discharge circuits and may be varied slightly by a variable resistance 23. The thyratron is triggered from the secondary winding of a transformer 8, the primary of which carries the excitation current of the betatron; the secondary winding may be connected to the grid of the thyratron through a source of bias potential, as in Fig. 1, or through a condenser and a resistance network, Fig. 3 (not shown).
