Abstract
A detergent briquette has a longitudinal channel extending therethrough whereby dissolving liquid may flow in contact with the inner surface of the channel and with the outer surface of the briquette in either order, the diameter of the channel being between one-tenth and one-quarter of the diameter of the briquette. A cylindrical briquette with a central longitudinal channel of the dimensions aforesaid may be <PICT:0687075/III/1> <PICT:0687075/III/2> used in washing machines, where it is placed in a dispenser and water caused to flow through the channel and over the outer surface thereof to produce the washing solution. The rate of dissolution of such a briquette can be shown to be roughly constant and hence a uniform concentration of the detergent in the solution is maintained. A suitable cylindrical briquette has a height of 8 inches by 4 inches diameter with a 3/4 inch channel. The briquette is placed in a dispenser of such design that the water passes through the central channel and then returns over the outer surface of the block or vice-versa. In the form shown, the cylindrical briquette 10 is supported by an apertured plate 13 within a dispenser 12. An inlet pipe 14 is fitted communicating with the channel 16 in the briquette, and an outlet pipe 15 is fitted communicating with a compartment 17 below the plate 13. The briquettes are preferably moulded in a mould with a core both made from a resilient material, e.g. rubber, a resilient plastic or a similar rubber-like material, to accommodate the expansion of the liquid or semi-liquid detergent mass used during its solidification. In a suitable apparatus, the flexible cylindrical mould 20, Fig. 5, divided longitudinally at 21, is mounted in a case 22 formed of two parts hinged together. The mould rests on a rubber &c. disc 23 provided with a central hole in which the flexible core 25 is mounted, the other end of which is held in a clamp 26 mounted on the case. After the briquette has solidified, the mould is peeled off and the core removed by stretching it.
