Abstract
687,013. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. HEMSCHEIDT MASCHINEFABRIK, H. June 13, 1950 [July 2, 1949]. No. 14738/50. Classes 122(i) and 122(v) [Also in Group XXXII] In a hydraulic piston type vibration damper wherein the piston and piston rod have elastically yielding packings; the axial and radial dimensions of the packings are such that, on canting of the piston the body thereof does not come into contact with the cylinder wall and the piston rod does not come into contact with the cylinder cover. The piston packing 11, Fig. 3, is constructed as a hollow cylinder the wall of which is externally divided by deep grooves 5 into a number of ribs 6; it may be fitted tightly on the piston body or as shown it may be fitted on a thin metal cylinder 12 which has axial clearance between the ends 7, 8 of the piston and radial clearance on the piston body. The axial length of the sleeve 11 may be greater than that of the cylinder 12. The packing 11 may be À1 to À2 m.m. greater in diameter than the cylinder bore. The piston rod packing, Fig. 4, is in the form of a sleeve having internal grooves 5<SP>1</SP> and bears on the piston rod 2 with initial tension; it may be fitted tightly into the cylinder end or as shown have radial clearance 16. In a modification the inner end of the sleeve is, gripped in the cylinder end while the outer end is free to vibrate with the rod 2. The piston is secured to the rod 2 against a spring ring 10 by a nut 9. The parts which slide one upon the other may be of other than circular cross section.
