The slice-thickness regulating gauge of a slicing machine is automatically returned to knife guarding position after slicing is finished by the gramophone-like spring inside a rotatable drum through mechanism which also rotates the hand knob, 12 to zero position the drum and mechanism being held inactive by movement of a control rod 27. The apparatus may be added to a gravity feed slicer of the type shown in Specification 615,650. In operation the operator turns hand knob 12 whereby a flexible band 24, Figs. 2 and 3, rotate the ring 22 of the drum 21 so that a pinion 23 and rack 26 pulls a control rod 27 the slot of which closes a switch 28 of the knife-driving motor. At the required slice-thickness setting a locking plate 29 now grips the rod 27 and locks it and the drum 21 against return movement. The knob 12 may now be turned back to any other slice thickness setting or to zero without stopping the machine. To stop the machine the operator pushes in a push button 31 so that its end 32 deflects the plate 29 so that the friction grip of its hole on the rod 27 ceases whereby 27 is moved back through its rack and pinion when the spring inside the drum 22 can rotate the drum and so restore the settings to initial position. When the locking plate 29 is thus moved to disengaging position it is engaged and held there by a pivoted detent 33 so that the spring has time to rotate back the drum 22 and also to return rod 27 both to their initial positions until the last part of this movement of the control rod 27 causes a striker 35 thereon to engage and free the detent 33 from 29, so that the spring 30, Fig. 4, pulls the locking plate 29 askew to hold the rod 27 again. In another construction the return spring drum is controlled electro-magnetically with a brake shoe as the holding device. The circuit for these arrangements and the driving motor are as in Fig. 8 (not shown).
