Abstract
686,846. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 3, 1950 [March 7, 1949], No. 5449/50. Class 39(i) An electron optical image converter tube has an apertured spherical anode cap and a concave photoelectric cathode bordered by contiguous with and electrically connected to a conductive zone also concave to the anode, the radius of the cap being not greater than the difference between the radius of the cathode and the shortest distance between anode and cathode. The spherical part 2 of a glass vessel 1 is coated internally with a thin translucent conductive coating 3, e.g. of silver, obtained by sputtering or electric deposition and connected externally through a vacuum tight seal. On this layer is formed a photo-electric cathode 5 comprising a mixture of silver and caesium oxide particles on which a thin layer of caesium is absorbed. At the other end of the vessel 1 is a reentrant part 6 closed by a flat plate 7 carrying a fluorescent screen 8 or a thin transparent conductive layer connected by metallisation to the anode. A cylindrical metal tube 9 with an apertured spherical cap 10 comprises the anode, the aperture in the cap having a constant section over a distance equal to its diameter. The ratio of the curvatures of anode and photo-cathode should not exceed 1:4. When the electrodes are not truly concentric, the shape of the conductive wall 3 is varied or the distance between the electrodes adjusted to allow reproduction of the same size of surface.
