In an impact wrench or screwdriver comprising an operating element and a head adapted to be hit by a hammer whereby sudden torque is applied to the operating element against the action of a return spring acting between the members, the head is held against rotation during delivery of the blow by a handle temporarily disposed in an operative position at right angles to the rotational axis. The operating element 10 comprises a cylindrical member 19 slidable in a tubular member 16 integrally connected to the head 12, a screwdriver bit 11 or wrench or spanner part being carried by the member 10. The opposite ends of a pin 18 extending diametrically through the cylinder 19, work in inclined slots 17 in the tubular part 16. The releasable handle comprises a tommy bar 27 which may be inserted through either of the pairs of slots 15 provided in the head 12. A compression spring 21 is interposed between the member 10 and a pin 23 slidable within a recess in the end of the tubular part 16, the outer end 26 of the pin being adapted to engage and frictionally locate the tommy bar. In a modification a part cylindrical handle is hinged to the upper end of the tubular part 16 and may be folded into an inoperative position parallel to the axis of the tool in which position it engages the ends of the transverse pin 18 and allows the tool to be used as an ordinary screwdriver. Two tools may be provided, the slots in one being inclined oppositely from those in the other. In another modification the tubular portion 16 is connected to the member 10 and the pin 18 to the striking head 12. The Provisional Specification describes an impact wrench wherein the head is of hexagonal form and is held against rotation by one end of a wrench.
