Abstract

A non-oxidizing atmosphere for use in metallurgical processes is produced by burning a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon-containing fuel with a gas containing predominantly nitrogen together with oxygen e.g. air, removing carbon dioxide from the gaseous products, adding hydrogen thereto, and passing the mixture at a high temperature over a catalyst whereby the added hydrogen is caused to react with any residual oxygen in the said mixture. The carbon dioxide formed may be removed by treating the combustion gases with alkanolamines e.g. one or more ethanolamines, and the added hydrogen may be conveniently obtained mixed with nitrogen by the cracking of ammonia as described in Specification 462,531. Most of the water formed may be removed by condensation prior to the removal of carbon dioxide, and the last traces by passing the gases through a solid adsorbent e.g. silica gel. Sulphur compounds in the gases are oxidized to sulphur dioxide or trioxide which may be removed by known scrubbing processes.
