Abstract
685,492. Skein - winding machines. BAREISS, C., and OSTERMANN, A. VON. Oct. 27, 1950 [Oct. 31, 1949]. No. 26200/ 50. Class 120 (ii). Skeins of yarn are wound and bound on a reel by forming on the reel an open loop of binding thread severed from a supply, winding yarn into a skein lying within the loop of binding thread, severing the yarn from its supply, and knotting together the ends of yarn and binding thread to form a bound skein. In apparatus for carrying out this method, a series of gripping and guiding members are located lengthwise of a reel for simultaneous winding of a plurality of skeins, and a corresponding number of oscillatable cutting and knotting means are arranged on the framework of the apparatus, corresponding elements of each series being operable in common. As shown, (Fig. 1), a longitudinal bar 18 of the reel 1 carries a series of gripping and guiding devices 10 at a number of winding locations spaced lengthwise of the reel. Each gripping device comprises a pair of stops 11, (Fig. 2), defining winding spaces 12, and associated gripping fingers 13, 14, and guiding fingers 33, 34. Corresponding fingers at the various winding locations are carried on longitudinally-movable rods 15, 16, 35, 36 for simultaneous actuation. Corresponding to each winding space 12 the reel carries a laterally-spaced spring-loaded loop-forming finger 19. Yarn 5 to be wound and binding thread 6 are drawn from spools 3, 4, and guided to the reel through feeds 7, 8, respectively. At the commencement of winding, the reel is rotated anti-clockwise as seen in Fig. 1 until the trailing ends of yarn 5 and thread 6 overlie the guide 17 of finger 14, the latter being then moved to clamp the yarn and thread against the corresponding stop 11. Further movement of the reel in the same direction brings the yarn and thread opposite finger 19 ; feeds 7, 8, are now moved to the left as seen in Fig. 2 and the reel is rotated clockwise to form an open loop of the yarn and thread around finger 19. Feed 7 moves to the right to bring yarn 5 into the winding space 12, and the thread 6 which overlies the guide 17 of finger 13 is then clamped by the latter against the other stop 11 (Fig. 12), after which thread 6 is cut between finger 13 and feed 8 by one of a series of shears 26 which are swung down about a pivot 25. The winding of a suitable amount of yarn follows. The reel is stopped with gripping devices 10 uppermost and feed 7 is moved farther to the right so that the yarn can be clamped by finger 14 against stop 11, after which the yarn is severed between finger 14 and feed 7 by shears 26. At this point feed 8 also moves back to its original position. Guide fingers 33, 34 then move in opposite directions to engage the yarn and thread running from finger 14 to finger 19 and the binding thread running from finger 13 to finger 19 and draw these yarn and thread portions over the skein, finger 19 being drawn inwards against its spring (Fig. 16). One of a set of knotters and shears 39, 42, pivoted at 40 is now engaged with the group of four threads 44, forms them into a knot, and cuts them between the knot and finger 14, the knot thus formed including the two ends of the wound yarn and the two ends of the binding thread. Two arms 9, (Fig. 1), are now moved to tension the skein so that it is lifted out of space 12 and can be drawn off the reel. The various members are operated simultaneously for all winding positions under manual control, or the whole machine, including the control members, may be operated automatically.
