A cable stopper comprising a base a, a cover e hinged thereto, and closing means p for closing the cover onto the base so as to grip a rope or cable s between them, is characterised in that said base and cover have complementary grooves k and k<SP>1</SP> which combine to form a curved rope-receiving passage.
