Abstract
685,014. Change-speed control. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Dec. 28, 1950 [Dec. 28, 1949], No. 31510/50. Class 80 (ii). To facilitate cross-shift movement of the depending end 10 of a manual five-speeds and reverse gear-shift lever between the 2nd-3rd speed slot II, III of a fixed gate 17, having at least three offset forward-speed slots, and the offset 1st speed slot I, the cross-shift movement to slot I is opposed by a transverse spring-plunger 33 pressing directly on a lock-plate 16, guided for transverse movement only, with the shift-lever 10, on the fixed gate 17 and having a single longitudinal slot in which the lever 10 makes its gear-establishing movements. The spring- plunger 33 has its rightward movement positively limited by a fixed shoulder 36 corresponding to the II, III gate-slot, so that the crossshift movement thereto from the I slot is spring- assisted only as far as the former slot, facilitating a continuous longitudinal movement from I to II, which is further facilitated by a radius 38 at the entry to slot II. To permit use of a relatively weak spring for the plunger 33, the latter is acted on by a spring detent 41, engaging in the II, III position a notch 44 in the plunger, so that, in downshifting from II to I, the driver must first overcome the detent 41 by a jerk, and later the light resistance of the plunger 33 alone, the I slot being defined by the detent 41 entering a second notch 45 in the plunger 33. Further cross-shift movement to the offset reverse slot R is similarly opposed by the plunger 33 after freeing the detent 41. Shifts between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th speed slots II, III and IV, V are unaffected.
