Abstract
684,933. Grinding. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. Feb. 15, 1951, No. 3636/51. Class 60. A machine for honing the insides of tubular articles comprises means for presenting workpieces continuously to a honing tool 6 on a slide 5 which is so mounted in a supporting frame 4 by means of reeds 7, 10 that relative movement between the slide and frame produces a resultant straight line movement of the slide, means for advancing and retracting the frame relative to the workpiece-presenting means, and means for oscillating the slide relative to the frame and the workpiece-presenting means whereby the honing tool operates on the workpiece with a straight-line motion. The tool slide 5, Figs. 1 and 6, is supported at each end by an upstanding reed 10 which is secured at its lower end in a clamp 8 supported by reeds 7 depending from the frame 4; this frame is secured to a base member 9 on a movable support 41. The tool slide is built up of two channel-shaped members 11, vertical ribs 13 and slide bars 24, the space between the slide bars 24 being arranged to receive a unit for oscillating the tool slide with a straight-line motion as permitted by the supporting reeds 7, 10. The oscillating unit which is. supported on the frame 4, comprises a shaft 15 having an eccentric or crank-portion which is mounted in bearings in a housing fitting between the slide bars 24. A balancing weight is mounted on the shaft 15 which is rotated from a motor 75 by a belt 76. The support 41 on which the frame 4 is mounted is supported on a tubular bar 42 so as to have limited slidable and rotatable movement thereon by means of a pin 50 which is connected with the support, passes through elongated slots 51 in the bar 42, and is secured to a plug 47 slidable and rotatable in the bar; a spring 45 urges the plug 47 rearwardly in the bar 42. The longitudinal movement of the support 41 (and therefore the frame 4 and slide 5) is effected by the spring 45 under the control of a peripheral motor-driven cam 74 which co-operates with a cam follower 62 on an arm depending from the support 41. The support is tilted about the axis of the bar 42 so as to force the honing stone 6 against the work by a spring 67 attached to an arm extending from the support, the slot 51 in the bar 42 being sufficiently wide to allow the necessary rotation of the plug 47; retraction of the support from this position is effected by a face cam 73 which is driven with the cam 74 and co-operates with a cam follower 61 on the support. The work feeding and holding means comprises a tubular housing 25 with internal sleeves 25,' 25<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 11, and a reciprocating pusher 27 which allows workpieces to drop one at a time from a shoot 33 into the sleeve 25<SP>11</SP> and forces them to a chuck 37 mounted for rotation on the forward end of the housing. The chuck comprises spring fingers 39 extending inwardly from a peripheral ring secured to a pulley 35 which is mounted on the housing for rotation by a motor 36. The pusher 27 is controlled from the plug 47 by pivotally-connected levers 40, 55, of which the lever 55 has a ball-jointed connection 60 with the plug 47. The cycle of operations is such that one workpiece is processed during each revolution of the cams 73, 74. While the tool slide is in retracted position, the pusher 27 is operated to advance a new workpiece into the chuck and to force the processed workpiece therefrom. When the honing stone 6 has become worn to a pre-determined extent, the support 41 will have tilted sufficiently to cause a cam 64", Fig. 1, thereon to operate a switch 65 which actuates a warning light. As the support 41 is then swung from the work and returned to its withdrawn position by the cams 74, 73 acting in turn, the cam 64" is first disengaged from the switch 65 and then opens a second switch 66 at the time the support reaches its withdrawn position so that the honing cycle is then stopped; a second cam 64' on the support serves to reset the switch 65.
