Abstract

684,731. Friction gearing. PAPP, P. Jan. 25, 1951 [Feb. 6, 1950], No. 1914/51. Class 80 (i). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a friction drive of a high speed spindle 4 the spindle is supported entirely by its engagement between driving friction wheels 5, 8 and 6, 7 on rigidly journalled shafts 9, 10 respectively and further driving friction wheels 16, 17 on a shaft 18 which is journalled in a slide member 27 which is pressed resiliently by a spring 34 towards the spindle 4 to maintain the driving contact. The shafts 9, 10 and 18 are driven through flexible couplings 40 from shafts 44, 45 and 46 respectively carrying pulleys 47-51 which are suitably driven by belts from a driving motor (not shown). The pairs of driving discs 5, 6 and 7, 8 are arranged to overlap radially so that the distance between their centres is less than the sum of their radii. The spindle 4 is located axially by means of a peripheral ridge 73 formed thereon engaging between flanges 74, 72, the latter being on the wheel 17 which is urged axially by a spring 22 adjustable by a screwed sleeve 23.
