Abstract
684,416. Control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and OLDHAM, T. J. F. Feb. 13, 1951 [Feb. 14, 1950], No. 3747/50. Class 38 (iii) [Also in Group XXXV] A synchronous machine such as a synchronous condenser 5 is driven up to synchronism with the supply to which it is to be connected by an induction motor 1 the speed of which is rendered adjustable by the injection into its secondary windings of a voltage at an appriopriate low frequency. Fig. 1 shows the induction motor having a primary rotor winding supplied through slip-rings 2. The rotor also carries a regulating winding connected to commutator 3 from which polyphase voltages at slip frequency are derived for injection into the secondary windings on the stator of the motor. The amount of speed adjustment may be sufficient to cause the motor 1 to run at the synchronous speed of the machine 5 or above it. A handwheel may adjust the brushgear to set the slip to any desired small value. Control of the Scherbius type is shown in Fig. 2 in which a low frequency generator 7 is connected to the rotor secondary winding of the starting motor 9 through slip-rings 13, Adjustment of speed is obtained by means of excitation regulator 12 for the machine Y. In this case the starting motor has fewer poles than the synchronous condenser. The system may be used for starting synchronous type frequency charger sets for linking systems of unequal frequencies. The Provisional Specification refers to a starting motor of the Schrage type.
