684,080. Electron image tubes. FERNSEH GES. Sept. 17, 1951 [Sept. 18, 1950], No. 21747/51. Class 39(i) The electron image from a photo-cathode is focused by an electromagnetic field which is normal to the cathode surface at the plane of intersection and has an intensity which increases from the centre to the effective edge of the cathode by at least 25 per cent to eliminate distortion of the projected image. The electron image from the photo-cathode 4, Fig. 1, of an inconoscope is focused on to the storage electrode 5 by an electrostatic lens, formed by a potential of 800 volts between the cathode and an anode in the form of a silver coating on a glass cylinder within the tube, and a coil 7 housed within the iron casing 6. The increased magnetic intensity at the cathode edge is obtained by a pole piece 8 which may be provided with an auxiliary winding 10, Fig. 4, a collar 9 and a stepped or conical aperture, the diameter of which is about three times the thickness of the pole piece and touches or just clears the corners of the image. The invention may be applied to image intensifiers.
