Abstract
683,998. Dielectric heating. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 21, 1951 [Oct. 27, 1950], No. 22151/51. Class 39(iii) [Also in Groups XXXV and XL(c)] Apparatus for supplying constant voltage across a varying load (e.g. a high frequency dielectric heater 24) comprises a radio-frequency source 10 coupled to the load 24 through an impedance-inverting quarter-wave line 14, the load being tuned away from resonance by a variable shunt reactance 28 of opposite sign to the load, and the source being coupled to the line through an impedance (e.g. the transformer 12 and condenser 16) which is high compared with the load impedance as seen from the input end of the line. As shown, the load 24 is capacitive, and the reactance 28 is inductive, the reactance 28 being adjusted so that the circuit 24, 28 remains on the inductive side of resonance throughout the heating process, and is of high impedance. This impedance is reflected as a low impedance at the input end of the line 14 and its variations have little effect on the current fed to the line through the condenser 16, which forms, together with the output coil 18 of the transformer 12, an off-tune series combination of high impedance. Current at the input end of the line thus remains substantially constant, and produces constant voltage at the load end of the line. -
