Abstract

Nitrogenous textile fibres are dyed by means of a chromable dyestuff in the presence of a chromium salt and a cationic surface-active agent, the initial pH of the bath being sufficiently high to prevent rapid chromation but insufficiently high to damage the fibre, and dyeing is continued at an elevated temperature whilst the pH is gradually lowered to promote rapid dyeing and chromation. Magnesium sulphate may also be present in the bath. The initial pH is preferably not greater than 9. In an example: (1) wool is immersed in a bath containing a chrome dye and a mordant obtained by mixing potassium dichromate with a condensation product of octadecyl guanidine bicarbonate and ethylene oxide deposited on magnesium sulphate, the initial pH of 8.5 to 9.0 being lowered during dyeing by adding acetic acid. In other examples: (2) yellow corn dextrine is added to the mordant which is used as in (1); (4) the mordant contains also dextrine; (5), (7) and (9) yellow corn dextrine, the condensation product of (1), potassium dichromate and magnesium sulphate are colloidized in a mixer and the dyeing carried out while adding sulphuric acid to lower the pH; (10) the condensation product of polyethylene oxide and the dimerized acid obtained by heating soya bean acids is used as surface-active agent in the process of (1); (15) yellow dextrine and the condensation product of (1) are blended with a chrome dye and added to a dyebath containing also ammonium acetate, magnesium sulphate and potassium dichromate, the dyeing being started at pH 6.0 and reduced during dyeing to 5.0 by adding acetic acid; (16) wool is dyed from a bath containing a blend of the condensation product of (15) with a chrome dye, ammonium sulphate and potassium dichromate, the initial pH of 5 to 6 being lowered during dyeing by adding acetic acid. In the remaining examples, alternative chrome dyes are used or the dyeing is carried out with a casein or nylon fibre.
