Abstract

683,393. Cutting webs. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. July 26, 1949. [Aug. 4, 1948] No. 19607/49. Class 31 (i). [Also in Groups XVI and XXXII] In apparatus for winding sheet or strip material into rolls (see Group XVI), the material is severed, after completion of one roll and initiation of winding onto a second roll, by means of a knife 13 operating between shearing guides 33, 34 situated between guiding rollers 31 for the material. The knife is carried on a frame, pivoted at 59, which is urgeddownwardly by air pressure in a cylinder 77 but is normally held in the raised position by the extended piston rod 83 of an air cylinder 82, acting as a stop rod. When the material is to be cut, the pressure in stop cylinder 82 is automatically reversed to allow knife 13 to descend rapidly. Heating elements 71 are provided to heat the knife for improved cutting.
