Abstract

<PICT:0683078/III/1> <PICT:0683078/III/2> A portable diffusion-type gas tester for quantitatively detecting the presence of a deleterious gas in air comprises a casing divided by diffusion diaphragm 7, Fig. 3, into chambers 8 and 9, the gas sample being collected by probe 4, Fig. 1, and forced by rubber bulb 2 to inlet 20 and thence through chamber 8 and the pressure in chamber 9 due to diffusion of the deleterious gas being measured by a U-tube manometer 16. A second rubber bulb 3 is adapted to force scavenging air into both chambers on completion of the test through inlet 19. A pair of valves 11, 12, interconnected so as to be reversible by operation of lever 10, are adapted, in one position, to direct the gas into chamber 8, and in the other, to direct scavenging air into both chambers. A distributer 14 with louvre-like plates 15 serves to effect a uniform distribution of gas over the membrane. In order to hold the liquid in manometer 16 at zero or any desired position a valve 17 is provided. The casing is pivotally secured at 6 to a support 5 so that the manometer may be inclined. The support 5 is carried by a harness comprising a belt 22 and shoulder straps 21.
