Abstract
A filtering agent for tobacco smoke comprises active charcoal associated with a quantity, preferably twenty per cent by weight of the charcoal, of copper sulphate, and may be used, alone or with other agents such as cotton or silica gel, in a tubular unit for insertion in a pipe stem or cigarette holder. The agent may be prepared by granulating mixed active charcoal and copper sulphate, or active charcoal saturated with copper sulphate solution, mechanically after first adding water to make a paste if desired and appropriate. The granulated product is then heated to 300 DEG C., in vacuo or in a nitrogen or other oxygen-free atmosphere, until some or all of the water of crystallization of the copper sulphate is driven off.
