Abstract

682,598. Universal joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 24, 1950 [Nov. 30, 1949], No. 30726/49. Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iv). [Also in Group XXX.II] A resilient coupling device, shown as a universal joint, comprises driving and driven members 10, 11 having cylindrical portions 10a, 11a, interrupted so as to form axially extending fingers carrying arcuate plates 13, to which are bonded rubber masses 12. The rubber masses 12 are also bonded to arcuate plates 14 clamped in rings 15, 16 having internally coned faces, so that tightening of bolts 17 compresses the rubber radially. Rotational movement between the driving and driven members is limited by the overhang 12a of the rubber on the arcuate plates 13. As applied to a drive for a track wheel of an electrically propelled vehicle, one part of the coupling is connected to a toothed wheel rotatable on a rigidly mounted quill while the other is connected to the track wheel. A unitary clamping ring may be drawn by bolts onto coned surfaces on the outer arcuate plates to compress the rubber radially, or alternatively a clamping ring in four segments may be used for this purpose, each segment being bolted to its two neighbours. The device also has applications to the resilient suspension systems of motors, engines and the like.
