Abstract

681,604. Differential gearing. MASSA, M. CASA-. Sept. 6, 1949 [Sept. 10, 1948], No. 23102/49. Class 80 (ii). The planet shafts 40, 48, Fig. 1, of a motor vehicle or like differential gearing are interconnected by a worm train 44, 46, 52 which allows normal differentiation but introduces internal friction when the load torque on the half shafts 28, 34 becomes unbalanced, the helix angle of the gear 46 being forty-five degrees less half the kinetic friction angle under normal conditions of lubrication and use e.g: 42 degrees 17 mins. approximately, and the helix angle of the gears 44, 52 being complementary to that of the gear 46. The shafts 40, 48 are mounted in a housing 18 rotated by a ring gear 12 and are respectively connected to the shafts 28, 34 by spur pairs 42, 32 and 50, 38. The gear 46 is mounted on a radial shaft 54, Fig. 3, rotatable in the housing 18 and accessible for dismantling on removal of an end plug 65 held by a set screw 67. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also a modification in which four equally circumferentially spaced planet shafts are used, .interconnected by four radial worms mounted in pairs on two independently rotatable shafts at right angles, diametrically opposed planet shafts being connected to the same half shaft. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
