Abstract

Alkylbenzenes are oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acids by contacting them in the liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an oxidation catalyst at 140-170 DEG C., raising the temperature during the reaction and completing the oxidation at 180-200 DEG C. Various metallic oxides, hydroxides and salts are effective as catalysts, cobalt compounds being preferred. The oxidizing gas preferably contains less than 50 per cent of oxygen. The rate of flow may be increased during the oxidation. The reaction is facilitated by the addition of one of the products and also of the corresponding aldehyde to generate free radicals. The mono- and polycarboxylic acids obtained may be separated by fractional distillation of the free acids, methyl esters or acid chlorides. Examples show the oxidation of p-xylene to p-toluic and terephthalic acids and of m-xylene to toluic and isophthalic acids. The starting materials preferably have 1-4 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, other specified compounds being toluene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, diethylbenzenes, cumene, p-cymene and propyl- and butyl-substituted benzenes.
