Abstract

Alkyl trimethylammonium halides prepared by reacting alkyl halides with trimethylamine in the presence of water, are purified by treatment with boiling aqueous alkali at pH 12, followed by treatment with active carbon. In the example, a mixture of 65 per cent dodecyl bromide and 35 per cent tetradecyl bromide is heated with 28 per cent aqueous trimethylamine at 95 to 100 DEG C. for 5 hours. The reaction mixture is diluted with water, adjusted to pH 12 by means of sodium hydroxide and boiled to remove excess trimethylamine. The solution is stirred with active carbon at an acid pH for 20 hours, heated to 90 DEG C. and filtered.ALSO:An aqueous solution of dodecyl- and tetradecyl-trimethyl ammonium halides is used for cleansing and sterilizing beer handling equipment. A preferred solution comprises 0.02 per cent of a mixture of 65 per cent dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and 35 per cent tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. The mixture is prepared by reacting the appropriate alkyl bromides with trimethylamine (see Group IV (b)) and is purified by treatment with boiling aqueous alkali at pH 12, followed by treatment with activated carbon. Detergent inorganic salts such as sodium carbonate and sodium phosphate may also be present.ALSO:An aqueous solution of dodecyl- and tetradecyl-trimethyl ammonium halides is used for cleansing and sterilizing beer handling equipment.
