Abstract

Polymers containing at least 10 per cent vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride are stabilized by incorporating therein a salt of the formula <FORM:0680409/IV (a)/1> where M is an alkaline earth metal and X is hydrogen or chlorine or an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The polymers may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinyl and vinylidene chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride with acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, styrene and butadiene. Specified salts are the calcium, barium, strontium and magnesium salts of 2-hydroxy-5-chlorobenzophenone, and the calcium salts of 2-hydroxy-benzophenone, 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzophenone, 2-hydroxy-5-ethyl - benzophenone, 2 - hydroxy - 5 - propyl-benzophenone and 2-hydroxy-5-butyl-benzophenone. The polymer may contain a plasticizer, e.g. dioctyl phthalate.
