Abstract

680,195. Measuring heat quantities. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PROVINCIAAL EN GEMEEN-TELIJK UTRECHTS STROOMLEVERINGSBEDRIJF. April 24, 1951 [April 28, 1951],. No. 9509/51. Class 97 (iii). [Also in Group XIX] A heat consumption meter for a flowing fluid is provided with a flow-meter driving a toothed cylinder, the number of tooth of which varies in axial direction, co-operating with a toothed wheel which is axially slidable on a shaft driving a counting mechanism and is shifted by a pivotal lever having a fixed fulcrum loosely engaging the slidable toothed wheel, a floating lever being pivoted to the pivotal lever and being coupled at each end to a Bourdon tube thermometer. The shaft 2 of a continuous flow type water meter 1 drives, through a gear 3; a stepped toothed cylinder 4, whose shaft carries a gear 5 actuating counting mechanism 6 to indicate the quantity of water flowing in a heating plant. Each of two Bourdon tubes 7, 8 forms part of a thermometer the temperature feelers of which are placed in the forward flow of hot water and return flow of cooled water respectively. Pivotally connected to the free end of each Bourdon tube is a link 9, 10, each of which is pivotally mounted on a pin 12 secured to a lever arm 14 rigidly secured on a shaft 13 which carries a lever arm 15 engaging with its forked end 19 the chamfered hub 18 of a toothed wheel 16 slidably mounted on a square shaft 17 and adapted to be driven by the cylinder 4 and to drive a counter 21 through gear 20. The thermometers and Bourdon tubes 7, 8 are filled with mercury at high pressure, e.g. 150 atmospheres. The Bourdon tubes are preferably of equal size and shape and so mounted that their free ends move along parallel lines a, b upon changes of temperature so that with the linkwork suitably adjusted and the number of teeth on the cylinder suitably graded, the displacement of the wheel 16 will be linearly proportional to the temperature difference and the counter 21 will indicate the quantity of heat consumed in the plant. The extent of displacement of the wheel 16 may be varied by adjusting the pivot 12 of the floating lever 11 in a slot of the arm 14 whereby the active length of the arm is varied. As shown, the number of teeth on the lower part of the cylinder 4 is constant so that a constant minimum quantity of heat independent of the temperature differential is registered by the counter 21, e.g. this may apply for differentials below 20‹ C. Where there are no teeth the cylinder should be of smaller radius than it is between teeth to avoid driving by friction. In a modification, the forked end 19 of lever 15 is formed separately and is pivoted on a block 22 which is pivoted on the lever 15 so that the fork 19 pivots about two axes at right angles. Double tariff counting mechanism may be provided, e.g. for day and night, comprising two counting mechanisms alternately driven through differential gear controlled by a relay excited by a time switch.
