Class 122(v) A sealing device comprises two flexible U-section sealing rings D, D<SP>1</SP> each supported with their open ends facing each other by a segmentally formed ring A, A<SP>1</SP> so constructed that the segments may move relatively to one another to vary the internal diameter of the ring, a flexible insert ring F fitting inside the sealing rings and sealing against the inside of the lips thereof, means to admit fluid pressure to the space between the sealing rings to urge them into contact with the moving member to be sealed and press them against their associated supporting segmental rings A, A<SP>1</SP> whose segments are thereby moved so that they closely surround the moving member. The segments of the rings A, A' are tongued-and-grooved to adjacent segments and are freely supported in recesses H in sleeves C,. C<SP>1</SP> that fit in the packing chamber and also support the outer sides of the flexible sealing rings D, D' which are held apart by spacer rings E, E<SP>1</SP>. Lubricant under pressure is supplied to the space between the sealing rings D, D' through a bore R in the packing chamber housing and grooves O and K in the sleeves C, C<SP>1</SP> and spacer rings E, E<SP>1</SP> respectively. Relief grooves Q are formed in the packing chamber walls adjacent the segmentally formed rings A, A<SP>1</SP>. The two flexible sealing rings D, D' may be replaced by a single ring having a continuous inside lip, the insert ring F then being omitted.
