Abstract
679,476. Two-part couplings combined with switches. GILLOTT ELECTRO STEAM COOKERS, Ltd. May 22,1950 [May 20, 1949], No. 13574/49. Class 38 (i). [Also in Group XXXVII] A switch, e.g. for an electric kettle, comprises fixed contacts 6, 7, formed on the ends of the heater element 2, and movable contacts 18 carried by an insulating block 8, the contacts normally being held closed by a bimetal strip 21 having a projection 20 engaging a shoulder 22 on the block, and the contacts being separated by springs 11 on distortion of the strip 21. The block 8 is guided on pins 9, 10 in a housing 4, outward movement of the block being limited by the engagement of shoulders 12a, 13a with the heads 9a, 10a of the pins. The contacts 18 are formed on pins 17 retained, against the action of springs 19, in tubes 16 having turned-over ends 16a, the tubes being fixed in block 8 and extending outwardly as pins 14, 15 co-operating with a detachable plug 24. The housing 4 is clamped to the kettle by a nut 26 having a skirt portion 25 enclosing the plug 24. When the strip 21 deflects, the springs 11 move the block 8 and plug 24 outwards without removing the plug from pins 14, 15. In order to maintain an earth contact after the strip 21 has deflected, the guides 9, 10 may be housed in the block in metal sleeves which extend outwardly as earth pins, or the plug 24 may carry a resilient strip engaging the skirt 25. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the outer ends of the tubes 16 are formed as pillar-type terminals.
