Abstract
678,751. Marine flares. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. April 10, 1951. [April 28, 1950] No. 10477/50. Class 9 (ii). A water-borne flare is surrounded by a casing containing means for ejecting the flare, the upper part of the casing being surrounded by a buoyancy chamber, the lower part of which is easily ruptured so that on discharge of the flare the unruptured part of the chamber modifies the recoil of the casing. The flare consists of a millboard tube 1 with a pressed delay 2 in 'the base below a small charge of powder, above which charge is a flare candle with attached parachute. A felt washer 3 surrounds the delay and rests on an expelling device within the metal casing 4. The expelling device consists of a mill-board tube 5 closed at each end by book-muslin discs 6, 7 and containing an explosive charge 8. This device rests on a wooden bobbin 9 on which is wound a delay fuze 10 adapted to be ignited by a percussion igniter protected by a screw-cap 11 at the base of the casing. The top of the casing is closed by a lid 12, spacers 13 being interposed between the lid and a closure plug of the flare. The buoyancy chamber consists of two annular pieces 14, 15 of sheet iron welded to the casing 4, the space between the pieces being closed by a cylindrical sheet iron wall 16 welded in position. The lower annulus 15 is of thin sheet so that it ruptures easily during ejection of the flare, water then rushing into the chamber causes an air cushion which brakes the recoil.
