Abstract
678,234. Shearing metal bars &c. CARTER, A. March 13, 1951 [Feb. 18, 1950], No. 4222/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] In an automatic machine for feeding and cutting-off lengths of rods, bars, &c., feed rolls driven by a hydraulic ram remain stationary during the return stroke of the ram and hydraulically-actuated shears operate automatically at the end of each feeding stroke of the ram. Feeding work; shearing.- A continuous bar is fed to the shears 3, Fig. 1, by co-operating spring-loaded feed-rolls 24, 25 and straightening rolls 42, 62 &c. driven by an automatically-reciprocated ram 5 through a rack and pinion 6, 8 and intermediate gears 11, 20, &c., the drive incorporating a hydraulically operated clutch which is disengaged automatically during the return stroke of the ram 5. The length of bar fed is adjusted by a stop 150, Fig. 7, mounted on adjusting screws 152 at the rear end of the ram 5 and limiting the extent of the return stroke of the rack 6. The ram 5 and shear ram 3 are actuated by hydraulic pressure from a pump 80 and reciprocate automatically under the control of piston valves D, E which move to reverse the operation of the rams due to the build-up in pressure which occurs in the supply when the ram 5 reaches each end of its stroke. In one position of the valves the ram 5 feeds the work forward and the shear ram is actuated to withdraw the shears. In the other position the ram 5 is withdrawn and the ram 3 actuated to shear the work, a valve 147 actuated by the ram 3 at the end of its stroke preventing the return of the ram 5 until the shearing stroke is completed. At the setting of the valve E for the feed stroke of the ram 5 a clutch 14, Fig. 7, in the drive for the feed rolls is actuated through a hydraulic intensifier 112 and at the setting for the return stroke the intensifier 112 is opened to exhaust and releases the clutch 14. Valves 127, 128 actuated near each end of the stroke of the ram 5 by adjustable stops 125, 126 on the rack 6 open the respective supply lines to the ram to adjustable by-pass valves 133 or 134 which bring the ram to rest without shock. In a modification a mechanical free-wheel clutch may replace the hydraulically-operated clutch 14. Straightening.-The drive for the feed rolls 24, 25, Fig. 1, is mounted on a gear-box A and coupled to co-operating intergeared rolls in the gear-box A for straightening the work in the vertical plane, the rolls being coupled through a drive-shaft 67 to similar co-operating intergeared rolls in a gear-box B for straightening the work in the horizontal plane. The three lower rolls 44, 46, 50 are mounted directly in the frame A and co-operative rolls 57, 58 are mounted in housings 32 which are vertically adjustable by screws 41 in the frame for varying the degree of bending. These upper rolls and the upper feed roll 25 on shaft 35 in the housing are driven from shafts 23, Fig. 6, interconnecting the lower roll drives through bevel gears 26, 27, 30, 36 and a vertical shaft 28, the bevel gear 30 being slidably keyed on the shaft 28 to permit vertical movement of the housing 32. The straightening rolls in the box B are similar to those in the box A but in a modification in which metal strip is to be straightened in the vertical plane only the box B is omitted.
