Abstract

678,149. Windscreen-wipers. PRODUCTIVE INVENTIONS, Inc. June 11, 1947 [Jan. 29, 1946], No. 15424/47. Class 138 (i). A connection means for detachably connecting a windshield wiper blade unit to a windshield wiper arm unit comprises means 3 resiliently mounted on the blade unit for connecting the unit to a connector part 40 on the arm unit and means 6 for holding the units detachably connected, a rubber element 2 resiliently supporting the connecting means 3 and acting on the holding means 6 to assist in the detachable connection. The rubber element 2, Figs. 2, 4, also forms the wiper blade, and is mounted in a holder 1, the sides 7 of which are of arcuate section to limit its movement. The holder has three pairs of rectangular openings 12, 13, 14, Fig. 9, in its sides, the openings 14 being engaged by oppositely directed lips 44 on the holding means 6 which is formed as a latch and is resiliently held in place by the top of the blade 2. A connecting member 3 closely fits over the latch 6 and has two pairs of oppositely directed lips 58, 59, which engage grooves 28 on the blade 2, through the openings 12, 13. The resilience of the blade causes it to project slightly through the openings and so normally prevents metal to metal contact between the holder 1 and the connecting means 3 and permits relative tilting which is limited by projections 60 on the connecting means 3. The blade assembly is connected to a wiper arm 5 by means of a fitting 42 which carries the connector part 40, comprising a pin which is engaged between a projecting lip 34 on the latch 6 and slots in the connecting means 3. The side walls 41 of the fitting 42 press against the walls of the connecting means and help to lock it in position on the blade. Moving the latch by means of its lever 33 releases the blade assembly from the arm. Specifications 655,261 and 678,198 are referred to.
