Abstract
A flux for soldering or brazing has as its active component an inorganic flourine compound which is gaseous or volatile at soldering &c. temperature. The compound may be incorporated into a stable non-oxidizing atmosphere forming a carrier therefor, e.g. dry nitrogen for joining straight carbon steel parts and dry helium in joining parts reacting with nitrogen, or if completely gaseous at brazing temperatures may form such an atmosphere. Examples of such compounds are ammonium fluoborate, bifluoride or polyfluorides, stannic tetrafluoride, ammonium fluosilicate, titanium tetrafluoride, zirconium tetrafluoride, or hydrogen fluoride. As an alternative, the compound may be a gas at normal temperatures and may contain monovalent fluorine and an element of atomic weight greater than 3, such as boron trifluoride, tungsten hexafluoride, or silicon tetrafluoride.
